Facebook is targeting users of entry-level Android devices with a new application that is now available in a handful of developing countries.
The application is called Facebook Lite and is basically a low-fidelity version of the complete application known to hundreds of millions of users around the world. Lite, which appears to be actually a container for a web application, is only 262 KB in size and should work even on devices with very low processing power and slow 2G connections. As Jon Russell from TechCrunch points out, the application is based on Snaptu, an application that Facebook acquired in 2011, which allows Facebook to run on some feature phones.
Facebook Lite for devices with low specifications
The application is quite basic in functionality and design, but all the key components are present, including Messenger, Pages, Groups and more. There is also support for notifications, so users should be able to trust it for the main Facebook experience. Here is the description of the Play Store:
- Quick to install: the application is less than 1 MB
- Quick to load
- Efficient with the data.
- Designed for 2G networks and areas with limited network connectivity
When testing the application on my Mate 7, performance and responsiveness are clearly several steps below the full Facebook application, but that is what is expected from an application designed to run on basic devices.
More About Facebook Lite
Facebook Lite allows you to use Facebook in 2G conditions, so it saves a lot of storage space but maintains many of the features of Facebook, such as liking photos, finding people, editing your profile and managing your groups, for example.
In addition to these classic features, Facebook Lite also allows you to find friends and family, follow people of interest to know what they have been doing, find businesses and places to get reviews, photos or opening hours, save photos by adding them to albums. Explore nearby events and let people know if you are going, receive notifications and share photos or memes, among many others.
Do not miss the latest news by being connected to your friends and interests and use Facebook Lite as a personal organizer that allows you to store, save and share your media directly from your Android camera. Despite being so easy, this feature is completely safe since you have control of your photos and privacy settings, so you can choose which photos or videos you want to be private or even create a secret album only visible to people of your choice.
